Description
Scarce Valentinian II (375–392 A.D.)
Victory – Captive – Chi-Rho Reverse
Ancient Roman Bronze Coin (AE4)
A scarce late Roman bronze of Valentinian II, struck during the final years of his reign after his restoration to power in the West.
Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian II facing right.
Reverse: Victory advancing, holding wreath and palm; captive seated at foot. In the field appears the Chi-Rho (☧), the early Christian symbol representing Christ.
Date: 388–392 A.D.
Material: Bronze (AE4)
Condition: Pleasing late Roman example with clear devices and visible Christian symbol. Natural patina with honest circulation wear consistent with age.
This reverse type is especially desirable for its prominent Chi-Rho, reflecting the firmly established Christian character of the Empire by the late 4th century. Coins from this short and turbulent final phase of Valentinian II’s reign are notably scarcer than earlier issues.
An appealing and historically significant piece of late Roman Christian coinage — ideal for collectors of both Roman and early Christian artifacts.
