A Little About Rolleiflex
The Rolleiflex story began in Germany with Franke & Heidecke, who introduced the first Rolleiflex in 1929. The design was revolutionary in combining a twin-lens reflex viewing system with a compact roll-film camera.
The camera uses two lenses mounted one above the other. The lower lens is used to take the photograph, while the upper lens projects the image onto a focusing screen viewed from above. This allowed photographers to compose photographs while looking down into the camera rather than holding it to the eye.
Later Rolleiflex models became particularly famous for their 6 × 6 cm medium-format images, generally using 120 roll film. The combination of high-quality optics, compact construction and the distinctive waist-level finder helped make Rolleiflex one of the best-known professional TLR cameras of the 20th century.
The Rolleiflex was also used by notable photographers including Irving Penn, who purchased his first Rolleiflex in 1938 and used the camera extensively throughout his career.
