Description
Antique Early Victorian Holy Bible – London 1850 – Eyre & Spottiswoode – Miniature “Pearl 24mo” Edition
A beautiful and historically significant early Victorian edition of the Holy Bible containing both the Old and New Testaments, printed in London in 1850 during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Published by the renowned firm Eyre & Spottiswoode, officially appointed as “Printers to the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty,” this compact edition represents an important piece of 19th-century British printing history. The date is shown in Roman numerals as M.DCCC.L. (1850).
This edition is described as a “Pearl 24mo,” referring to its finely printed miniature format. “Pearl” denotes the exceptionally small 5-point typeface, while “24mo” (vicesimo-quarto) identifies it as a pocket-sized volume, approximately 5 inches tall, designed for portability and personal devotion.
Printed and sold from the publisher’s warehouse at 189 Fleet Street, London, this Bible was produced by one of Britain’s most historically important printing houses. Founded in 1770, Eyre & Spottiswoode held the royal patent for printing the Authorized King James Version of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer in England for well over a century.
