Historical Significance
Valentinian I became emperor in AD 364 and was renowned for strengthening the Roman Empire’s western frontiers during a challenging period of barbarian incursions and political uncertainty. The reverse inscription, SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE, translates as “Security of the Republic,” reflecting the emperor’s commitment to defending and stabilising the empire.
The Siscia Mint, located in present-day Sisak, Croatia, was one of the Roman Empire’s major minting centres and produced large quantities of imperial coinage for circulation throughout the Balkans and beyond.
