Claudius II Gothicus came to power during the turbulent Crisis of the Third Century, a period marked by political instability and repeated invasions. He is best remembered for defeating the Gothic tribes at the Battle of Naissus in AD 269, one of the Roman Empire’s greatest military victories.

Following his death, believed to have been caused by plague, Claudius II was deified by the Roman Senate. Memorial coins bearing the inscription CONSECRATIO were struck to honour his memory and proclaim his status as a divine emperor. Depending on the variety, these coins often feature an eagle or an altar on the reverse, both traditional symbols associated with the emperor’s ascent to the heavens.
