Historical Significance

Valentinian II became emperor as a child in AD 375, ruling the Western Roman Empire during a period of political intrigue and military conflict. Between AD 383 and 388, his authority was challenged by the usurper Magnus Maximus, and it was Emperor Theodosius I who ultimately restored Valentinian II to the throne after defeating Maximus in AD 388.

Coins struck during this period reflect the complex political landscape of the late Roman Empire and represent some of the last generations of Roman coinage before the empire’s permanent division in AD 395.
