Description

1943 D Australia 3 Pence MS 65 Coin

  • The Australian threepence (3d) was part of the pre-decimal coinage and was minted from 1910 until decimalisation in 1964 (with gaps in some years)

  • For 1943, it was struck in sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper)

  • Weight: about 1.41 g

  • Diameter: 16.0 mm

  • Edge: plain

  • Obverse: portrait of King George VI (by Thomas H. Paget)

  • Reverse: three stalks of wheat tied with a ribbon, with “AUSTRALIA” above and “THREE PENCE” below; the date is split on either side of the wheat stalks

Varieties & Mint Marks

During World War II, Australia outsourced some coin production to U.S. mints, so there are versions from:

  • Melbourne (no mint mark) — the “standard” Australian issue

  • Denver (D mint mark) — minted in the U.S. for Australia; D appears below the date on the reverse

  • San Francisco (S mint mark) — similarly produced for Australia; S appears below the date on the reverse
