About Licinius I
Licinius I ruled the Eastern Roman Empire during a period of dramatic political and religious change. In AD 313, he joined Constantine the Great in issuing the famous Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance throughout the Roman Empire and changing the course of Western history.
Although initially an ally of Constantine, Licinius later became his rival, with their struggle ending in Constantine’s victory in AD 324 and the reunification of the Roman Empire.
The Jupiter & Eagle Reverse
The reverse depicts Jupiter (Jove), king of the Roman gods, standing with a Victory figure and sceptre, while his sacred eagle rests beside him. This powerful imagery symbolised divine authority, military success, and imperial legitimacy during Licinius’ reign.
