Description

R1 RARITY — Licinius I (308–324 A.D.)
Jupiter with Captive Reverse
Ancient Roman Bronze Coin (AE3)
321–324 A.D. | 19mm | 2.65g

A scarce R1-rated bronze of Licinius I, struck during the final years of his reign amid escalating conflict with Constantine the Great.

Obverse: Laureate head of Licinius I facing right; imperial titles surrounding.
Reverse: IOVI CONSERVATORI — Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on globe and scepter; captive seated at foot, symbolizing Rome’s triumph over its enemies and divine protection of the emperor.

Date: 321–324 A.D.
Diameter: 19mm
Weight: 2.65 grams
Material: Bronze (AE3)
Rarity: R1 (Scarce issue)
Condition: Well-centered with clear legends and strong reverse detail. Attractive patina with natural age and honest circulation wear.

The Jupiter “Conservator” type represents Licinius’ appeal to Rome’s traditional chief deity during a period of civil war and political instability. Captive imagery reinforces themes of military strength and legitimacy.

A desirable and harder-to-find late Roman bronze from the dramatic final chapter of Licinius’ reign.
