About Emperor Aurelian
Aurelian ruled for only five years, yet he transformed the Roman Empire. He defeated the breakaway Palmyrene Empire in the East and the Gallic Empire in the West, restoring Roman control over territories that had been lost during decades of civil war. His military successes earned him the title Restitutor Orbis, recognising his role in reuniting the empire.
He also strengthened Rome’s defences by constructing the famous Aurelian Walls, many sections of which still stand today.
The Double Denarius (Antoninianus)
Originally introduced by Emperor Caracalla as a coin valued at two denarii, the Antoninianus had become heavily debased by the third century. During Aurelian’s reign, the denomination underwent important reforms that improved both its quality and silver content, helping restore confidence in Roman currency after years of inflation. <
The emperor’s radiate crown on the obverse is the traditional symbol identifying the coin as a double denomination.
